In addition to staff mobility within the Erasmus+ programme, there are other opportunities to spend a short or a longer stay abroad for teaching, further training or continuing education purposes. Depending on the offer, you may need to take care of the organisation and financing yourself.
The DAAD provides funding for short-term lectureships (4 weeks to 6 months) and long-term lectureships (one year and more) abroad. For short-term lectureships, you can submit an unsolicited application with a project proposal at the university abroad. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered. Funding for long-term lectureships is linked to advertised positions at universities abroad.
The “Kongress- und Messereisen” programme enables master students, doctoral candidates and researchers at universities of applied sciences (HAW/FH) to actively participate in international conferences and trade fairs abroad, making current research results available to the international research community. Funding recipients can establish new contacts in the international scientific community and maintain existing contacts.
In order to improve research collaboration between universities in Germany and abroad, the DAAD provides funding for the mutual exchange of scholars from certain partner countries in the programme “Bilateraler Wissenschaftleraustausch.” The programme is based on cultural exchange programmes and bilateral agreements with partner organisations abroad. Applications are accepted from German and international post-doctoral scholars who work at universities and research institutions. Funding is provided for research stays.
Please find more project-related and individual offers from the DAAD and other organisations, some of which apply only to certain regions, can be found in the scholarship database.
The German Research Foundation (DFG) provides various funding programmes for research stays of lecturers and scholars at universities abroad and scientific institutions.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) also offers various programmes for the international mobility of scholars.
Fulbright Germany offers travel grants in the programme “Forschung und Lehre:” Postdoctoral scholars (professors, lecturers, postdocs) can apply for a travel grant from Fulbright Germany all year round. Funding is provided for teaching or research stays of three to twelve months in all disciplines at scientific institutions in the USA.
Fulbright Germany provide funding for German early-stage researchers to conduct a four to six-month research project at a US university or scientific institution that is directly related to the academic doctoral thesis they have already started working on.
The funded research project must contribute to the strengthening of science relations between US and German universities.
