Financing and Scholarships

Travel, accommodation, meals and, where necessary, a visa can lead to significant costs. However, there are also countless ways to get financial support. What’s more, the chances of receiving a grant are good.

Researching costs

We recommend you get at least a rough overview of the costs of your stay abroad in advance. These can vary greatly depending on the country, but also on the size of the city. Comparing is thus worth the effort. Make sure to consider these items:

  • Accommodation
  • Cost of living
  • Travel
  • Insurance
  • Visa
  • Vaccinations
  • For freemovers only: tuition fees

Checking funding

Many of the scholarships mentioned here are partial scholarships, i.e. they only cover part of the costs of a stay abroad, so additional funds are required.

If possible, we recommend you apply for multiple scholarships at the same time.

Some scholarships can also be combined to cover a larger part of the costs, e.g. Promos and Mobility Grant, Erasmus and Green Mobility Grant or “Auslands-BAföG” and most scholarship programmes.

Important note: Always pay attention to the application deadlines, no matter which programme you are applying for!

It is often also possible to look for a part-time job in the destination country. However, it is essential you clarify in advance whether you need a a work permit for this.
