Memberships

Being a member in international organisations and associations is of great importance to HSBI, as it opens up new opportunities for international exchange and cooperation and thus improves the quality of teaching and research.

One of the key benefits is access to a broader network of educational institutions and experts around the world, which helps facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience and provides access to key resources, technologies and research opportunities. As a result, HSBI gains new perspectives on global challenges and opportunities for further development.

Our memberships improve the reputation and visibility of the university in the international academic community and are an important factor in strengthening our competitiveness and international orientation.

GATE-Germany – International University Marketing

Logo GATE-Germany

HSBI as a GATE-Germany member
HSBI strives to drive the entire university’s internationalisation forward. In this process, membership in the GATE-Germany Consortium for International University Marketing is highly beneficial, in particular for the recruitment of international students. The various services offered by GATE-Germany can be used at reduced member prices, e.g. to advertise study programmes.

The consortium:
Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, GATE-Germany is a consortium for international university marketing of German universities. It also has an office in the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). GATE-Germany supports the universities by providing marketing instruments and expertise in presenting and positioning themselves internationally with their study and research offers. Member universities benefit from the DAAD’s global network of branch offices and information centres as well as the comprehensive international competence and expertise in international university marketing, which the DAAD contributes to the work of GATE-Germany.

The range of services:
GATE-Germany membership opens up access to numerous marketing formats and tools, such as webinars, (virtual) university fairs, advertisements on DAAD websites, advertising study programmes in the annually updated database “International Programmes in Germany,” etc. These formats and instruments are complemented by a large archive of articles, studies and (country-specific) publications. In addition, GATE-Germany offers seminars and workshops for further and continuing education conducted by Internationale DAAD-Akademie (iDA) for which member universities pay reduced participation fees.

UN Academic Impact (UNAI)
United Nations Academic Impact UNAI Member Logo - English

In May 2022, HSBI joined the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative, which aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in supporting and contributing to the realization of United Nations goals and mandates, including the promotion and protection of human rights, access to education, sustainability and conflict resolution. In this initiative, compliance with and support for the 17 UN Sustainability Goals are key.

The membership at UNAI combines two of HSBI’s strategic cross-cutting issues: sustainability and internationalisation. In view of the dramatic global developments in the fields of economics, ecology and social affairs, HSBI feels a responsibility to contribute to sustainability and sustainable development. In order to do so, it develops sustainability as one of its central strategic issues through a strategy process in coordinated fields of action that enhance the university’s profile, forming the framework for the sustainable transformation of our university at all levels. The process is then implemented through projects and measures developed by working groups. For our university, the fields of action in which the working groups will be active include study and teaching, research and transfer, campus life, building lifecycle as well as administration and governance.

Together with all members of the university, we want to make our own contribution to sustainable development and also provide an impetus to the region. As a socially responsible university that is open to the world, networking with international organisations and universities is also an important concern for us. UNAI membership enables us to participate in the global exchange of knowledge with more than 1,400 member institutions in more than 147 countries.

Scholars at Risk (SAR)
SAR Logo (© Scholars at Risk)

HSBI is an active member of “Scholars at Risk” (SAR), an international network of over 500 universities from 38 countries. SAR is committed to protecting persecuted scholars, preventing attacks on higher education and promoting academic freedom.

“By joining ‘Scholars at Risk,’ HSBI is showing solidarity with lecturers, researchers and students who are threatened in many countries because they peacefully express their ideas and ask questions,” says President Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schramm-Wölk. “Academic freedom is one of the core values of universities.  As an SAR member organisation, we demonstrate our commitment and assume the responsibility to maintain and promote freedom of expression both on a local and global level.”

According to the “Free to Think” report recently published by SAR, students and lecturers worldwide are being threatened due to their academic work and opinions. Threats range from travel restrictions and unjustified dismissals to prison sentences and violence. “Attacks on higher education narrow the space in which people can think freely and ask questions about complex and controversial issues,” says Robert Quinn, Executive Director of SAR. “Our member institutions play a central role in protecting scholars who are threatened by these attacks, and thus contribute to a stronger and safer academic community.”

SAR member institutions support persecuted students and lecturers, for example, by providing temporary employment in research and teaching, by publicly condemning attacks on higher education or through initiatives that promote academic freedom. Judith Peltz (judith.peltz@hsbi.de), Head of the International Office, is available to answer any questions you may have about opportunities to engage with Scholars at Risk.

German University Consortium for International Cooperations (DHIK)

Information text from the DHIK’s website:

The German University Consortium for International Cooperations (DHIK) is an association of 36 German universities of applied sciences and one Swiss university of applied sciences that together conduct exchange and double degree programs with international universities in applied engineering sciences.
The programs connect application-based university teaching with the university system of the partner country.
This way, future engineers do not only receive a practical education, but also interdisciplinary knowledge, international and intercultural competencies and problem-solving skills for the industry and economy of both countries.

The following university cooperations currently exist:

Groningen Declaration Network
HSBI has been a member of the Groningen Declaration Network (GDN) since April 2020. The GDN is an association of universities, ministries, digital service providers and scientific and educational organisations in 29 countries worldwide. The core objective of the network is to create a global student data ecosystem in order to remove barriers to mobility in studies and working life.

Promoting internationalisation is one of HSBI's most important strategic goals. However, international mobilities are always associated with administrative hurdles because they require the transmission of student and personal data, the authentication of which is often a problem. As a member of the GDN, HSBI helps to ensure that students can share authenticated study data when, where and with whom they want. The data ownership and personal rights of students are protected at all times.

With its membership of the GDN, HSBI commits to the statutes, objectives, regulations, Code of Conduct and ethical principles of the GDN as well as to participation in working groups and committees. It actively pursues the goal of facilitating international mobility by providing solutions for the transfer of student data during and beyond the study programme. As part of the DAAD and BMBF-funded Digital Mobil @ HSBI project, for example, HSBI is implementing EMREX in the new campus management system to facilitate secure data exchange.
