First connect|train|transform OWL at HSBI: Designing New Ways to Integrate International Specialists into the Labour Market

More than 750 visitors from the OWL region were able to inform themselves on immigration and residence legislation, the recognition of degrees, educational opportunities, qualifications and more at over 50 booths. The information fair’s aim is to reduce barriers and to sustainably integrate people with a migration history into the German labour market.

Researcher from Brazil Develops Innovative Process to Produce Biological Pest Control Agent in HSBI Laboratory

In agriculture, biological pest control is a highly sought-after alternative to chemical pesticides – including and especially in Brazil. At HSBI’s Bielefeld Institute for Applied Materials Research, visiting scholar Dr. Natasha Sant’Anna Iwanicki from the University of São Paulo has developed an innovative process with which the fungi Beauvaria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae can be used in commercial pest control products. Thanks to preconditioning, it withstands the necessary drying process better and can take full effect on the field. This success is the result of HSBI’s targeted efforts to make its research more international.

From the United States to HSBI: First RISE Scholarship Holder Conducts Two Months of Research at Gütersloh Campus

To participate in research projects at universities abroad, students in bachelor’s degree programmes can apply for the RISE scholarship to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). 19-year-old Kanav Gupta, a native of India, is studying computer science at Arizona State University. He was a research intern at Gütersloh Campus for two months. What will he remember in particular? The cultural differences between the United States and Germany.

The full-time bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering and a Research Master in Data Science have boosted the number of applications from international prospective students to HSBI’s Gütersloh Campus for the winter semester – a promising measure against the decline in the number of students and, in the medium term, also for the recruitment of professionals in the region, as many hope.

Visiting Scholar from Kenya Conducts Research on 3D Printing onto Textiles at HSBI

Antibacterial, conductive and tear-resistant: Nonsikelelo Sheron Mpofu is investigating how the properties of fabrics can be modified using 3D printing in the Textile Technologies lab at HSBI. At the same time, she wants to learn how more women in her African homeland can pursue careers in STEM fields and is examining corresponding support mechanisms here in Germany. Her research stay was made possible by HSBI’s equal opportunities fellowship for researchers from the Global South.

Alberta-OWL Consortium: HSBI brings together Canadian students and companies in the region – more internship offers wanted!

For eight months, Paderborn-based Technische Prüf- und Überwachungsgesellschaft (TPÜ) supervises an intern from Edmonton, Canada. The intern and the company were brought together by HSBI through the Alberta-OWL Consortium. However, not only intern Neil Fider benefits from the international exchange programme; so do students of HSBI who can go to Canada for a semester abroad in exchange – and not least, the company itself. There is demand for further internship opportunities in companies based in East Westphalia.
