From the United States to HSBI: First RISE Scholarship Holder Conducts Two Months of Research at Gütersloh Campus

To participate in research projects at universities abroad, students in bachelor’s degree programmes can apply for the RISE scholarship to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). 19-year-old Kanav Gupta, a native of India, is studying computer science at Arizona State University. He was a research intern at Gütersloh Campus for two months. What will he remember in particular? The cultural differences between the United States and Germany.

Promising Response to New English-Taught Programmes at HSBI’s Gütersloh Campus

The full-time bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering and a Research Master in Data Science have boosted the number of applications from international prospective students to HSBI’s Gütersloh Campus for the winter semester – a promising measure against the decline in the number of students and, in the medium term, also for the recruitment of professionals in the region, as many hope.

Visiting Scholar from Kenya Conducts Research on 3D Printing onto Textiles at HSBI

Antibacterial, conductive and tear-resistant: Nonsikelelo Sheron Mpofu is investigating how the properties of fabrics can be modified using 3D printing in the Textile Technologies lab at HSBI. At the same time, she wants to learn how more women in her African homeland can pursue careers in STEM fields and is examining corresponding support mechanisms here in Germany. Her research stay was made possible by HSBI’s equal opportunities fellowship for researchers from the Global South.

Under the title “AI Research Meets Practice: Perspectives for Companies and Society,” the consortium project SAIL invited participants to the Applied AI Day at HSBI. In addition to contributions from research and industry on the subject of artificial intelligence and its use in practice, an exhibition showed possible applications of AI.

6th International Week starts: HSBI welcomes more than 100 guests from 32 countries

The International Week will take place at HSBI from 13 May to 17 May for the sixth time – again with a record number of participants: more than 100 guests from more than 30 countries enrich HSBI’s faculties and campuses with international and intercultural courses, lectures, workshops and activities.

Alberta-OWL Consortium: HSBI brings together Canadian students and companies in the region – more internship offers wanted!

For eight months, Paderborn-based Technische Prüf- und Überwachungsgesellschaft (TPÜ) supervises an intern from Edmonton, Canada. The intern and the company were brought together by HSBI through the Alberta-OWL Consortium. However, not only intern Neil Fider benefits from the international exchange programme; so do students of HSBI who can go to Canada for a semester abroad in exchange – and not least, the company itself. There is demand for further internship opportunities in companies based in East Westphalia.

Research on Sustainable Technologies from an Equal Opportunities Perspective: HSBI’s New Horizons Fellowship Makes It Possible for Visiting Scholar from Bhutan

Since August, visiting scholar Dr. Hari Kumar Suberi from Bhutan has been conducting research on sustainable technologies as parts of networked systems on HSBI’s Minden Campus, focusing on women as disseminators of technologies. Suberi’s stay was made possible by the “New Horizons Fellowship,” which is being awarded to researchers from the Global South with reference to equal opportunities issues for the first time this year.

HSBI and the University of Tübingen Are Developing an Alternative to Glyphosate

Glyphosate reliably destroys unwanted plants, is used worldwide – and has been hotly disputed for years because of its negative effects on the environment and health. A ban on the herbicide in Germany and possibly even in the whole EU has hung in the air for a long time. Good thing that a better alternative is in sight: in a cooperation project with the University of Tübingen funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, doctoral candidates at HSBI are working on an environmentally friendly herbicide based on a natural sugar from cyanobacteria. The preliminary results are promising.
