Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is a partial scholarship that provides funding for semesters and internships abroad in Europe and some other countries.

Semester Abroad: Applying is possible twice a year as part of the application for exchange places at our partner universities: from late November until 31 January and from early May until 30 June.

Internships abroad: Applying is possible throughout the year, but by 4 weeks before the start of the internship at the latest.

Who can apply?

All regular HSBI students can apply from the 2nd semester onwards (for internships from the 1st semester onwards) regardless of their nationality.

What is funded?

Semester abroad

  • Study-related stays abroad to universities in Erasmus+ programme countries (EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway and Türkiye)
  • About Erasmus+ worldwide: Study-related stays abroad at some non-European universities (if enough scholarships are available)
  • The stays can either be fully on site or as blended mobility  (short stay abroad (5–30 days) combined with a mandatory virtual component), provided that the partner university offers this.

Study-related stays abroad at universities that are not partners of HSBI are not eligible for funding.

Internships abroad

  • Internships at universities, companies and organisations in Erasmus+ programme countries (EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway and Türkiye)
  • About Erasmus+ worldwide: Internships at universities, companies and organisations worldwide (if enough scholarships are available)
  • Postgraduate internships can also be funded if they are started promptly after deregistration and completed within 12 months.
  • Internships in national diplomatic missions or in European institutions or organisations that manage EU programmes are not eligible for funding.

Requirements for the internship:

  • Full-time internship (usually at least 35 hours/week); part-time internships are possible if they are reasonably justified (e.g. chronic illness that does not allow for full-time work)
  • Internship content should correspond to the study content

Internships at national diplomatic missions or European institutions/organisations that administer EU programmes cannot be funded.

Duration of funding

Within a study cycle (e.g. bachelor’s or master’s), a maximum of 12 months of Erasmus+ funding is possible. These 12 months include all stays abroad funded by Erasmus+ (semester abroad, internships abroad, BIPs, short stays for doctoral candidates).

The minimum length of stay is 2 months.

Scholarship benefits
  • Remission of tuition fees at HSBI’s partner universities
  • Language preparation through online language courses (OLS)
  • Scholarship: Please view the monthly funding rate  for your destination country here
  • Additional financial support for students with disabilities or chronic illness, students with children, working students and first-time academics
  • Green travel: Financial support for travel with low-emission means of transport

Simultaneous funding through the Green Mobility Grant and/or Auslands-BAföG is possible.

Information on Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is an EU programme to promote education, training, youth and sport in Europe. In the current programme generation (2021–2027), Erasmus+ aims to support European education agendas by driving forward the modernisation, internationalisation and qualitative improvement of the higher education sector in Europe. This includes strengthening the international competences, personal development and employability of students, increasing the attractiveness of the EU as a place to study and research, and promoting the sustainable development of higher education in third countries. In addition, the programme aims to help build more bridges across educational sectors and intensify cooperation between the various educational sectors.
