Empirical evidence of the relationship between social support and\r\npost-disaster mental health provides support for a general beneficial effect\r\nof social support (main-effect model; Wheaton, 1985). From a theoretical\r\nperspective, a buffering effect of social support on the negative\r\nrelationship between disaster-related stress and mental health also seems\r\nplausible (stress-buffering model; Wheaton, 1985). Previous studies, however, (a) have\r\npaid less attention to the buffering effect of social support and (b) have mainly relied on interpersonal support (but not collective-level\r\nsupport such as community resilience) when investigating this issue. This previous\r\nwork might have underestimated the effect of support on post-disaster mental\r\nhealth. Building on a sample of residents in Germany recently affected by\r\nflooding (N=118), we show that community resilience to flooding (but not\r\ngeneral interpersonal social support) buffered against the negative effects\r\nof flooding on post-disaster mental health. The results support the\r\nstress-buffering model and call for a more detailed look at the relationship\r\nbetween support and resilience and post-disaster adjustment, including\r\ncollective-level variables.\r\n "}],"type":"journal_article","intvolume":" 19","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"page":"2371-2384","date_updated":"2024-03-23T11:28:10Z","issue":"11","author":[{"first_name":"Torsten","last_name":"Masson","full_name":"Masson, Torsten"},{"id":"202383","orcid":"0000-0003-1541-9616","first_name":"Sebastian","last_name":"Bamberg","full_name":"Bamberg, Sebastian"},{"first_name":"Michael","id":"205743","full_name":"Stricker, Michael","last_name":"Stricker"},{"first_name":"Anna","last_name":"Heidenreich","full_name":"Heidenreich, Anna"}],"publisher":"Copernicus GmbH","doi":"10.5194/nhess-19-2371-2019","volume":19,"citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Masson_Bamberg_Stricker_Heidenreich_2019, title={“We can help ourselves”: does community resilience buffer against the negative impact of flooding on mental health?}, volume={19}, DOI={10.5194/nhess-19-2371-2019}, number={11}, journal={Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences}, publisher={Copernicus GmbH}, author={Masson, Torsten and Bamberg, Sebastian and Stricker, Michael and Heidenreich, Anna}, year={2019}, pages={2371–2384} }","mla":"Masson, Torsten, et al. “‘We Can Help Ourselves’: Does Community Resilience Buffer against the Negative Impact of Flooding on Mental Health?” Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, vol. 19, no. 11, Copernicus GmbH, 2019, pp. 2371–84, doi:10.5194/nhess-19-2371-2019.","ama":"Masson T, Bamberg S, Stricker M, Heidenreich A. “We can help ourselves”: does community resilience buffer against the negative impact of flooding on mental health?
