{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"In the project “Textiles and clothing to support children whilst learning” a collection of garments with integrated games has been developed which trains the motor skills and sensorial competencies of preschoolers in different ways. For this purpose, the researchers used the special haptic attributes of textiles – each fabric feels different, and children like to touch the soft, fleecy materials. Moreover, the common exploration of the garments and playing with them enhance the social competences of children and help to relieve fear of contact which is seen among a lot of pupils nowadays. After successful trial periods in nursery schools and a Montessori school in Mönchengladbach [1], the collection has also been tested in a kindergarten in Berlin. Here, most children have a migration background and just started to learn German. Therefore it was most interesting to notice that the use of the collection encouraged the children to communicate – they asked about others’ garments or for help with difficult games, explained which tasks they already handled and discussed about new possibilities to use the clothes. On the other hand, we found that also younger children – at the age of two or three years – were interested in the games which were designed for preschoolers. They sometimes even succeeded e. g. in opening and closing clasps and buttons. Therefore, a new collection has been developed which includes easier tasks especially for younger children. Now the kindergarten “Seepferdchen” is carrying out a long-term study in collaboration with the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"issue":"130","_id":"437","status":"public","year":"2006","type":"journal_article","title":"Textiles and clothing to support children whilst learning","citation":{"ieee":"U.
