Potential applications of lasers in the textile industry

The article gives an overview of the various activities at the Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) concerning the treatment of textiles using laser radiation. The joining method is based on the well-known laser transmission welding process for thermoplastics. The flexibility of a scanner-supported laser system allows for creation of wiring with complex geometries using high process speeds and offers a wide range of innovative applications for technical textiles and clothing. The laser radiation is transmitted through the upper joining partner, which is transparent for the laser wavelength in the near infrared (NIR) range, and then absorbed by the lower joining partner. Process faults may easily affect the mechanical performance of the laser seam. Fortunately, the optical appearance of the laser seam is a good indicator of its mechanical performance.
