Information for companies
The English-taught study programmes Industrial Engineering (PIE) and Mechatronics and Automation (MAP) address students of all nationalities, offering an ideal opportunity to get to know “technology made in Germany.” Interdisciplinary and business-related modules complement the technical aspects of the programme. Due to the universal orientation of the studies, graduates can be employed in various fields of occupation in a wide range of area. Companies value industrial engineers and mechanics for their diverse competencies.
Industrial engineers are particularly suitable for interdisciplinary activities in a company, as they are able to evaluate, organise and optimise processes economically and technically.
Industrial engineers can put the skills and competencies they have acquired into practice in a wide range of areas. In addition to the aforementioned interdisciplinary approach balancing technology and business-related courses, topics such as sustainability and diversity also enhance the graduates’ profiles. Industrial engineers work in purchasing, production planning, product management, quality and project management or technical sales. Later on, they often also fill positions in marketing, finance and controlling.
Mechanical engineers can combine elements from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. They enhance technical systems’ performance during their development and production. In addition, the engineers will learn how to bring complex technical systems into operation, to service and optimise them. During the work terms, students will apply their theoretical knowledge to current tasks in the company. To round off the training, strong project management skills and successful teamwork, also in international teams, are imparted. Engineers in mechatronics/automation are highly sought after in the mechanical engineering and the electrical industries. Their fields of activity include research and development, construction design, production, quality management as well as technical consulting, service and sales. Application fields of mechatronic systems include mechanical, vehicle and plant engineering, automation technology, aerospace technology, information and entertainment technology as well as medical technology.

The Work-Integrated Model
Students enrolled in the work-integrated study programmes are at the same time employed by a company, which is the peculiarity of the work-integrated programme. Each semester consists of an academic term and a work term. The academic term comprises lectures, seminars and laboratory courses at the university.
The subsequent work term takes place in the respective company for which the student is working. During that period, theoretical knowledge obtained at the university can be applied to day-to-day business at the company. During the work-related projects (4th and 5th semesters) students examine specific subjects and elaborate and submit their findings in form of a scientific term paper. The relevant work experience integrated into the programme is beneficial for both the student and the company and can provide a solid foundation for a possible permanent position in the company after having achieved the bachelor’s degree.
Industrial Engineering as well as Mechatronics and Automation can also be studied full-time without a practical partner (not work-integrated).
Suitability as Cooperation Company
Registration for the work-integrated study requires subject-specific work experience that accompanies studies.
Any suitable company can provide work experience:
1. The company must be able to permanently guarantee work experience in line with the objectives of the study programme in terms of personnel and structure.
2. There must be employees in the company whose qualifications make them suitable supervisors for the students during the work term. The professional supervisor must have at least the students’ targeted academic degree (i.e. bachelor’s) or an equivalent qualification (e.g. Diplom).
3. The company’s suitability also requires that the students have an employment contract with the company and that they receive a consistent, appropriate remuneration both in the work terms and in the academic terms. Annual leave must be granted in accordance with the requirements of the state in which the company has its registered office. (For German companies, the Federal Leave Act applies. Entitlement to annual leave will be calculated based on both the work terms and the academic terms.) Companies with registered offices in Germany are required to employ students subject to social insurance contributions. If the company’s registered office is outside Germany, the legal requirements of the state in which the company has its registered office must be observed.
HSBI’s Department for Scientific Further Education, Work-Integrated and Part-Time Studies will determine whether a company is suitable for cooperation in a work-integrated study. In order to do so, an employee of the department will conduct a detailed interview with the company management, an HR manager and the specialist supervisors – depending on the structure of the company. The interview will take place in the company regularly and can be supplemented by a visit to the company’s facilities. As an exception, company suitability can also be determined during a video conference.
The company suitability must have been determined by 30 June of each year at the latest.
